Welcoming October // September Review

The alarm keeps ringing
But they don't listen
They act as if they were deaf
Too deaf in the ears to hear the sound
No matter how loud it is

The alarm keeps ringing
But they have the bugs that keep buzzing
Both of them say it out loud
Which one is the loudest?

The alarm keeps ringing
Half of us realize it and we ready to pack our bags
Some of us even hold it tighter than ever
The rest are just don't care

The alarm keeps ringing
How to fix it?
What's wrong?
What should we do?
What's the matter?
What's going on?
How to do?

The alarm keeps ringing
But the people act like babies
They sleep and don't want to even notice
They sleep with pillows made by silk.

A little disclaimer:
I first wrote this blog post earlier this month at the beginning of October. I also planned to post this piece of writings on first week of October. But then I can't manage to finish this article due to campus and work things and stuff. I postponed to post this until now. Well, let's continue the unfinished article and post it!

Many songs are made of 'September' word, from Vina Panduwinata's September Ceria, Earth, Wind, & Fire's September, Edson's September to Green Day's Wake Me Up When September Ends. The month must be very special that a lot of musicians inspired by it.

For me, I've been waiting for this year's September since the beginning of the year for personal reason. But after the September had been passed, I just think the month was beyond I ever expected before. This year's September was a rollercoaster ride. It was been ups and downs.

I started the month by watching Superorganism and Prophet of Rage at Hodgepodge Superfest. It was two-day festival that held at Eco Park Ancol. North Jakarta on August 31st and September 1st 2019. Superorganism's performance was super cute. They are indie band based on England. I got opportunity to take a picture with some of their members but I think I don't want to upload it here.

Prophet of Rage is a super band consists of Tim Commerford (from Rage Against the Machine and Audioslave), Tom Morello (from Rage Against the Machine and Audioslave), Brad Wilk (from Rage Against the Machine and Audioslave), DJ Lord (from Public Enemy), Chuck D (from Public Enemy), and B-Real (from Cypress Hill). Their performance was awesome. I can't find another word cause it was totally -- let me repeat once again -- like totally, really, really awesome.

There is always a context within text, it was funny when they put 'Make Jakarta Rage Again' on the screen. We are all know that (from the name and the personnel) Prophet of Rage must be a group of super political musicians. Due to racial treatment to some Papuans nomads in Surabaya, something happened in Papua, a rage and a riot, but they didn't bring the issue there. They wrote Jakarta instead. When in the fact, nothing yet happened in Jakarta at that time.

But it only less than a month, university and high school students took the street in front of DPR/MPR (House of Representatives) building to rage against the representatives and government. Interesting coincidence, isn't it?

There were series of rallies. Several rallies from activists had been held before the students took the street. But the wave of rage got bigger after the House of Representatives passed the new Corruption Eradication Commission (KPK) bill into law in a plenary session, despite widespread criticism from activists, experts, and civilians.

The students finally took the street after that. They (or should I said, we, because I also agree with their notions) protested against amendment of Corruption Eradication Comission (KPK) law, Criminal Code bill, also some of other problematic and controversial bills. They also demand (well, it is present tense here, because the demands yet to be fulfilled) the parliament to immediately pass  the eradication of sexual violence bill and also the bill on housemaid protection.

They (or I supposed to say we?)  didn't only protest about the law, we demand (until now) the government to withdraw troops from Papua and release political prisoners, stop persecution of activists, seriously stop forest fires in Sumatra and Kalimantan, also punish corporation that cause them and etcetera. There are seven points of demand in total.

From those series of rallies, I joined them twice as civilian and I also went to KPK office at the day when the bill passed into law. I might not as aggressive as the students, but I find the urgency of join the strikes since the issues can affect to everyone's everyday life, like literally everyone. Joined them took the street was the least I can do to help them since they also voiced our discomfort toward the government and representative decisions.

After public outcry, Jokowi said he demands to postpone the process of Criminal Code and other problematic bills to be passed on plenary session. But some of people demands yet to be fulfilled, so students continue their rallies. They urge country’s commitment in anti-corruption movement and  responsibility in forest fires. Also public ignore to forget about how the representative abandoned the bills on eradication of sexual violence and housemaid protection for so long.

Unfortunately, the rally turned into violent and became riots in some places in the city. I don't want to point the finger nor blame anyone. I just want to tell the story here.

Let's make this post not to be too political and let's add more fun here because September, no matter how tiring, frustrating, and heart-breaking our county's condition is, still remained me some space to breath, to be grateful for little joy and happiness, to have some fun and to reflect and contemplate life, and also to live the fruitful life to the fullest.

I went to Bali to cover Soundrenaline 2019. It is an annual music festival and it also one of my fave music festivals this year since I got the opportunity to meet and watch Suede live! I can't imagine, after listen to them since high school, I finally got a chance to be close to Brett Anderson, to breath the same Bali air as Suede members, to sing a long while listened to they played their songs on the stage. I feel very lucky and grateful.

I also watch some other musicians, both international and local line ups, such as Primal Scream, Mellow Fellow, Mondo Gascaro, Glenn Fredly, Feel Koplo, Dipha Barus, etcetera. I also did some karaoke with my fellow journalists, tried the coffee which Robi 'Navicula' made to the audience, and met a lot of friends. I also got an interview opportunity and took some photos with Mellow Fellow. Me with other journalists, friends, and thousands people who came to Garuda Wisnu Kencana (GWK) for the festival had so much fun fun fun. (Well, I'm thinking to write about my trip to Bali, but yes, maybe on the next post or the post after the next post, I don't know, but I'll write about it).

Something to be highlighted on September was an event called Gemasi's Alumni Seminar that took me back to the campus. Gemasi stands for Gelanggang Mahasiswa Sastra Inggris. It means association for Unpad's English Department students. I came to the seminar as speaker, hehe. I shared some (hopefully) fruitful stories of my current job as music journalist and how study literature affects my writing and story telling capability and also how literature affects my sensitivity toward issues. I might not sharing a lot of things but the session was super fun.

On October 1st 2019, I decided to take a day off from office since I need to make a new passport at South Tangerang's immigration office. I took some rest by ate some delicious meals, went to coffee shop alone to read Haruki Murakami's Norwegian Wood and enjoy the solitude, and of course had a coffee, bought some skin care products and a new cloth, and had proper sleep. Well, I can say that I welcome October happily.

A little throwback

Before I went there, I barely knew about Taiwan. As long as I can remember, my first memory with the country was because I am a fan of F4 and Meteor Garden series when I was on elementary school back then. I once really wanted to go there just to meet Jerry Yan, the member of F4 who used to be my childhood crush haha. In 2018, I found an indie band called Sunset Rollercoaster who come from Taiwan. I enjoy their music, My Jinji, Burgundy Red, and so on are my fave songs of them.

Even smallest dream did come true. I got opportunity to go to Taiwan and stay at Taipei in the middle of 2018. Disney invited my media to cover Press Junket event of Ant-Man 2. Visit Taiwan no longer my dream when I got that opportunity, but as my plane arrived at Taoyuan airport, I knew I would love the country.

The city, I mean Taipei, is very clean. They have large pavement so we can walking on foot comfortably. We can move in the city with public transportation comfortably to. They have proper public transportation, from city bus to MRT.

Beside working, I also went to some places. I went to touristy attractions such as Taipei 101. Taipei 101 is the highest skyscraper in Taipei. On the top of it, there is an observatory where you can see Taipei from the top. The view is breathtaking, of course.

I also went to Jiufen. It located near Taipei. I took two-hour trip by bus to get there. There is a famous traditional market there. Some people said, the setting of Ghibli's Spirited Away is inspired by that market. In Jiufen, there is also a popular tea house called A-MEI. I loveeeee Jiufen very much. There are a lot of stores which sell Ghibli's merchandise there.

The other thing that can make you in love with Taiwan is food. The street food there looks tempting. I visited Taiwan on Ramadhan. It was very difficult to find halal food which free from pork and lard, but trust me, when you find it, it tastes so good! There are a lot of night markets that sell a lot of tempting Taiwanese street food such as crispy chicken or milk tea with boba on it. Of course, Shihlin Night Market is the most well-known.

I also love the atmosphere there. I think it will be nice to walk around, listen to 80s city pop tunes from your headseat while sightseeing the city. Taipei has the beat that the city need, but it doesn't make too much hustle bustle. The city both dynamic and slow, both busy and quite. It is far from crowded and you can see anything feels so neat in the city.

It was nice to visit Taiwan and I'd love to go there again someday.

How I Spent My Second Day in 2019: Ramen Night

Wednesday, January 2nd 2019:
I went back to the office after a new year day off. The office day was fine. It went so well just like I've been expected before. Well, in 2019, I decided to start every each morning with positivity and optimistic. I don't know how long it will last, but become more positive at mind, body, and soul is one of my new year resolutions.

Before the office day over, one of my friends (her name is Sesha) asked me to go out at the night. I agreed to meet her after office but at first we don't know where to go. Shesa then popped up with the idea of having some ramen for dinner. Of course she instantly got my agreement since ramen is one of my fave.

We ate ramen at one famous ramen house called Hakata Ikkousha at Senayan City. It tastes so good just like always. I ordered special chicken ramen and Shesa ordered tamtam ramen. We also ordered gyoza on sharing. Let's take a look the ramen I ordered on photos below:

She is Shesa!

Some food we ordered at the ramen house.

After that we went to some shops and bought some perfume (viva la payday!). We also had coffee and some nice and deep talks. It's always good to have chit chat with Shesa. She's not only a good listener but she's also can give you right advice, like kind of advice that you need to hear, not only what you want to hear.

She has an open mind so you can tell her literally everything and  she will still give you a zero judgement. But we don't always talk about life or serious things like that. At this night, we also had some jokes and we laughed a lot. It's very nice to catch up with such a good friend like her.

Well, I've got my second day of 2019 well-spent. It was fun and I had good time.

Playing with Analog (A Bali Story)

There’s always something romantic about using analog cameras. No, of course, I’m not going to glorify or romanticize those good old days called past here. I realized that we need to move on from past and I totally agree with changes and yes, we all need to adapt how technology and time change us (of course we also need to do it wisely). But I think how an analog camera works is interesting.

We need to fill our cameras with film roll before using it and every type of roll as its authentic color tone. It has frame limit, so we can appreciate each moment we capture, it makes every frame counted, precious, and priceless. Most of all, it takes patient to use analog since we need to process and wait to know the result.

Nowadays, everything runs so fast, time flies, and the philosophy behind using analog camera and processing the roll give us some break. A break to breath, look back, reflect what had happened and we left behind, and also wait for something worth it. It also gives us a lesson about cherish every moment and appreciate the process more than the result (because some time the result is not always turn to be something we have expected, sometime the photos being burned due to over-exposure or other reasons, sometime the roll being torn, or etcetera). Oh well, I’m being too sentimental, sorry.

So, I used to use analog camera on my childhood back then. I also learned about how to operate it manually on my uni time back then (yes, this girl took photography as her extracurricular on university back then), I even wore analog camera to capture my photo that being exhibited on one photo exhibition. But been a while since the last time I wore analog camera.

On previous year (whoa, it’s funny to called 2018 as previous year already), I tried to use analog camera again. A 31mm Olympus Trip 201 that I have since when I was a child. It is a pocket camera so I don’t need to set it manually. I thought it would be easy to use, but it turned out, I was totally wrong. My first roll (not really first, of course. I mean my first since I tried to use it again) burned. I lost all of photos that I took, 36 frames in total. The roll consists of random shots and photos of Vidya’s (anyway, Vidya is my classmate on high school back then) wedding reception and it had me really really sad.

But from that failure (haha sorry for being dramatic), I’ve learned something. I didn’t want to fall so deep, so I quickly bounced back (saras is just being dramatic again, lol, hehe). I tried to buy another roll and tried to capture some moments with my analog camera again. And yes, I brought my camera to Bali, now you know why I titled this post with ‘A Bali Story’ name.

Ok, let’s talk about Bali. I went to Bali – practically – to watch a music festival called Soundrenaline 2018 that being held on September 8 to 9 2018 at Garuda Wisna Kencana, but of course I also went to some beaches and tourist attractions. It was impromptu but also one of the best trips I ever had in 2018. I went there with my fellow music journos, Andika and kak Pohan.

We all never thought that we would attend to Soundrenaline. We only talked (and it was more like blabbering) briefly about how fun it is to watch Soundrenaline in Bali since they have a lot of big names on their line ups. We didn’t own a lot of money at that time, it was also too close from the date to save up so we can afford those expensive airlines tickets since there would be a lot of events in Bali that time and the tickets being highly-demanded (yes, in the same weekend of Soundrenaline there would be Bali Marathon. I saw on my Instagram timeline and it felt like everyone (well not literally everyone) were going to Bali). But glad that three of us have mutual spirit about it (lol!).

We made it to Bali. We went to Bali by train and ship one way and by plane to go back home. And oh, we also shared a room for three. We managed to go to Bali as frugal as possible (haha, we did it!). I used to go to Bali by plane and it only takes 1,5 or 2 hours to get there and by train and ship we need to spend more than 24 hours on the road! Don’t ask how tired it was, it was surely one tiring trip but also interesting, funny, and worth to be remembered. We took a train to Surabaya first, from Surabaya we went to Banyuwangi by train. Well, we also slept on a station in Surabaya because we arrived at midnight and our train to Banyuwangi departed in the dawn.

After all, it was all worth it. The scenery I saw when crossing the sea from Java to Bali is very very very breathtaking. It is very beautiful. The fact that we finally made it to Soundrenaline with all of those obstacles is counted as achievement for us.

We watched a lot of musicians on two-day festival of Soundrenaline. From local musicians to international musicians. My favorite part was when I met Phum Viphurit. He is an indie musician from Thailand. I watched him performed some of my fave songs, such as Lover Boy, Long Gone, and so on, I also talked with him about indie musicians a little bit.  At the end of second day, there was Limp Bizkit as the headline, but I was too tired to catch them up on first row, just like what kak Pohan and Andika did, so I watch them from the distance.

On out third day, we did some touristy activities and also acted like local. We went to some beaches, culinary spots (this the touristy activities part), and also watched a local gig (this the acted like local part). First thing to do in the morning was picked up the car we rent, and then we ate at Nasi Pedes Ibu Andika. We also went to iconic coffee shop named Bhineka Jaya (the coffee is highly recommended, well, I love that place!).

On the afternoon, we went to beaches, we picked Tegal Wangi and Balangan. Tegal Wangi is (of course) beautiful. It located under the cliff (if I’m not mistaken), there are so many rocks near the sea side, but it’s alright. The wave was friendly when we went there. And then we watched the sunset on Balangan. It was really fun. We talked, took photos and made some jokes while drinking and waiting for the sunset.

After had some dinner on fast food resto, we went to Kimono Hotel to watch a local gig where some local musicians who played on Soundrenaline also would play there. At first, I hoped that I could watch The Panturas and Heals there, but there was a heavy traffic jam on our way to the venue. When we arrived, The Panuras already finished their performance. I managed to watch Manjakani and Heals. It was good and it was more than enough. I really am happy.

We came back home by plane on the next day. We had a lot of memories and stories from Bali. So, I really am grateful for unforgettable trip.

Well, here I want to share some of pictures that I took with my analog camera in Bali. Sorry if this article is little bit jumpy, there are a lot of things on my mind that I want to write and it’s been a while since the last time I’m blogging.

On the way: Breathtaking view when crossing Java to Bali.

On the way: Andika read Laksmi Pamuntjak's Aruna & Lidahnya.

She is kak Pohan! Our savior, our lovely 'older sister'.

Soundrenaline Day Two: Us, captured by a man I barely remember who. His finger pops up on the photo, lol.

Soundrenaline Day Two: Finally watched Phum Viphurit!

Soundrenaline Day Two: Zee Avi performed there too.

Tegal Wangi: Hehe, know my finger turns to be popped up on the photo, lol.

Tegal Wangi: Andika captured the scenery.

Tegal Wangi: The beach is really nice and beautiful.

Balangan: Sunset always be a good time to contemplate and celebrate life at the same time.

Lebaran Pertama Tanpa Eyang Uti; Sebuah Surat Cinta

Ketika saya sedang menata kembali hidup saya pasca dikoyak-koyak oleh quarter life crisis.

Saya tahu, Eyang Uti tahu saya menyayanginya.

Semoga Allah SWT selalu menerangi jalannya menuju surga. Aamiin ya Rabb.

Sampai bertemu lagi, Eyang Uti dan Eyang Kakung. Saya sayang kalian.

Coldplay's A Head Full of Dreams Tour in Bangkok

Last month, I was invited by Warner Music Indonesia to watch Coldplay's A Head Full of Dreams Tour in Bangkok, Thailand. I was sent as music journalist from an Indonesian based online media. It was my second time to be sent aboard as a Journalist. Last year, HBO invited me to Singapore and had some interview with James Marsden, a Westworld's actor (I consider to write about it on my blog too. Soon!). I know I really am lucky since everyone (yes, like everyone) wants to watch their concert.

So on one Friday morning at April 7th 2017, I went to Bangkok. I flew from Cengkareng to Don Mueang International Airport, Bangkok. Ya, it's Coldplay and it's Bangkok! Again, I really am lucky.

There were some obstacles when our group headed to the venue. First, there was a long queue on airport's immigration (and yes, as I expected before, almost all of people on the airport went to Bangkok for Coldplay). After survived the immigration queue, we had to face Bangkok's traffic jam.

The traffic was so bad, especially around the venue. We finally decided to reach the venue on Rajamangala National Stadium on foot. But, yes, we are finally MADE IT TO COLDPLAY!

Coldplay's Bangkok concert was.......AMAZING! I can say that it was almost perfect. I love their setlist. They were not only played their new songs, but also played some of their old songs. But, the best thing about the setlist was how the setlist successfully touched everyone's heart. They arranged the setlist perfectly and made the concert felt so emotional. I cried two times at the concert.

Other things that I love about this concert are the lighting, the ambiance and the concept. They made the perfect lighting on the stage and also the great ambiance by Coldplay's glow in the dark signature wristband. And yes, the concept. The concept was perfect! They made it as if every each song has its own story. They made it with confetti, fireworks, and also some balls. I love it very much!

I feel so lucky that I have a chance to witness Coldplay's live performance. They are so great. I'm in love with them and instantly became huge fan of them after watch the concert (I bought their CD on Warner Music Thailand booth in the venue as to prove my fidelity toward them, haha).

Honestly, before the concert I never called my self as a huge fan of Coldplay. Of course, just like everyone else, I listen to them and grow up with some of their songs (who doesn't anyway?), but I never thought that I really listen to them, especially after Ghost Stories album (even I really am in love with O from Ghost Stories). I only listen to some of their songs from their old albums casually, and started listen to them again since A Head Full of Dreams album. But, somehow, when I listen to their songs, some of them remind me of some particular memories and then become my life soundtrack, just like Yellow, Paradise, The Scientist, Everglow, and so on (it was one of the reasons why I was really excited to watch them).

In the end I realize, Coldplay always there. Their songs always there from I was a kid until now. And yes, after the concert, I realize one thing, I am a huge fan of them. I really in love with them, their stage act, and their songs. I promise my self, if I get another chance to watch them again someday, I definitely will take it! So, see you again Coldplay!

P.S. click here to read my published report from Bangkok on the media I'm working for.
